Outdoor Environment
Nestled in Nesbitt Park — where nature is our greatest teacher
The heart of our centre
Nature-based learning in Nesbitt Park
Our expansive outdoor learning environment, nestled in Nesbitt Park, is the centrepiece of children's learning and connection to the natural world. Every room at Explorers has direct access to our outdoor spaces, ensuring that nature-based play is woven into every part of the day.
We believe that children are more grounded and centred when connected to the natural environment. Our nature-based curriculum encourages children to explore, discover, and learn through meaningful interactions with the outdoors — from planting seeds and observing insects to running on natural grass and climbing over natural obstacles.
Our educators use the outdoor environment as an extension of the classroom, creating intentional learning experiences that support physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.
Learning through nature
What makes our outdoor environment special
Our outdoor spaces are thoughtfully designed to provide rich, meaningful experiences that support every area of children's development.
Natural Playground
Our natural playground is the centrepiece of children's learning and connection to the environment. Children explore gardens, run on natural grass, and engage with the landscape daily.
Vegetable Gardens
Children participate in growing vegetables, caring for worms, and learning about sustainable food practices — connecting them to the natural cycle of growth.
Natural Materials & Loose Parts
Our outdoor spaces are rich with natural materials and loose parts that encourage open-ended play, creativity, and problem-solving.
Open Spaces
Expansive open areas allow children to run, climb, and develop gross motor skills while benefiting from fresh air and vitamin D.
Wildlife & Nature Observation
Nestled in Nesbitt Park, children have the opportunity to observe insects, birds, and local wildlife, fostering curiosity and respect for living things.
Risk & Challenge
Our educators guide children to recognise and evaluate appropriate challenges, building resilience, confidence, and physical capability in a safe outdoor setting.
Our belief
“Children benefit from natural materials and loose parts with meaningful time in our expansive outdoor learning environment.”
Nature-based play supports physical health, emotional wellbeing, creativity, and a lifelong connection to the natural world.
Outdoor rhythm
Nature woven into every day
Outdoor play is not an afterthought at Explorers — it is central to our daily programme. All rooms incorporate multiple outdoor sessions throughout the day, with children spending meaningful time in our natural spaces every morning and afternoon.
Our typical outdoor rhythm includes morning outdoor play from 8:00 to 9:15am, extended outdoor nature-based play from 10:00 to 11:00am, and afternoon sessions from 3:00 to 5:00pm. This ensures children have ample time to connect with nature, develop physical skills, and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and open spaces.
